"OS/2 2.0"
"Betriebssystem OS/2 Version 2"
This is the oldie of my publications: my first book
from 1992 when the good old DOS was getting to the end of its life span
and both Microsoft and IBM were trying to create a follower. While
Microsoft at first cooperated with IBM to create the second version of
OS/2, it soon got distracted by the success of Windows 3.1 and switched
to focusing on Windows.
Meanwhile IBM had built the base of a new revolutionary operating system
for the PC called OS/2 and with Version 2.0 brought out a system
targeted to the end user. Microsoft at the same time worked on Windows
95 which was still based on the archaic DOS. They ended up not coming out with a
"real" OS before Windows NT (and later XP) several years later.
Yet, OS/2 -even though superior in functionality and design- never
gained the full acceptance of the market and IBM stopped development
after Version 3.0 (Warp).
